David Anderson’s Story

The heart behind the Golden Bone…

At the heart of The Golden Bone Pet Resort is a man whose life has been devoted to animals and the people who love them. David Anderson, founder and lifelong animal advocate, built The Golden Bone from the ground up—literally. His journey began in 1985 with a simple pet taxi service and a bold vision: to create a haven for animals in the heart of Pittsburgh, a city that at the time had no urban kennels.

Inspired by a visit to Virginia where he saw a thriving pet care facility, David returned with a mission. He and his father purchased land and began construction with their own hands. David even lived in the original building, pouring sweat, skill, and soul into every inch of what would become a local institution. In November 1988, The Golden Bone opened its doors—and quickly earned the trust of pet lovers across the region.

As the demand grew, so did the facility. Over the years, The Golden Bone has expanded to over 11,000 square feet, now including specialized areas for grooming, cats, large and small dog daycares, and cozy boarding rooms that feel like home.

But what truly sets The Golden Bone apart is the heart behind the business.

David is not only a dedicated professional—he’s a passionate rescuer and volunteer. Over the years, he has personally rescued more than 900 greyhounds from racing tracks and 50 Galgos, a Spanish breed often abandoned or killed when no longer useful for sport. Disturbed by their suffering, David began traveling to Spain to bring them home—sometimes housing up to 11 rescues at once.

His compassion extends beyond animals. For years, David and his rescued Galgos, Clarence and Anna, have been comforting young patients at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. In 2023, David was recognized for over 3,000 volunteer hours bringing smiles, companionship, and comfort to families in their most vulnerable moments.

David’s commitment to community shines in countless ways—from housing pets of hospitalized families at no charge, to providing care for the Pittsburgh Police K-9 Unit for over 35 years. His life is a testament to service: as a U.S. Navy diving and salvage officer, a Bucknell University graduate, and a lifelong Pittsburgher with ties that run deep through his alma mater Shady Side Academy, his swim coaching career, and his support of local and international causes.

Despite having traveled to 106 countries and all seven continents, David’s heart never left Pittsburgh. The Golden Bone Pet Resort is more than a business—it’s a labor of love built for your pets, run by someone who understands what it means to care deeply.
